White powder with fatty acid odour
Application
It is widely used as a release agent for the production of many kinds of objects rubber, poly urethane, poly ester processing system, powder metallurgy. These applications exploit its "non-stick" properties . In cosmetics, zinc stearate is a lubricant and thickening to improve texture. It is an "activator" for rubber vulcanization by sulfur and accelerators. As discovered in the early days of vulcanization, zinc has a beneficial effect on the reaction of the sulfur with the polyolefin. The stearate is a form of zinc that is highly soluble in the nonpolar medium of the poly olefins. Being lipophilic, it functions as a phase transfer catalyst for the saponification of fats.zinc stearate is used in cosmetic formulations to increase adhesive properties. It is also used as a coloring agent. This is a mixture of the zinc salts of stearic and palmitic acids.Zinc stearate is primarily used in pharmaceutical formulations as a
lubricant in tablet and capsule manufacture at concentrations up to
1.5% w/w. It has also been used as a thickening and opacifying
agent in cosmetic and pharmaceutical creams, and as a dusting
powder.

Zinc Stearate as A Precursor for The Synthesis of Zinc Selenide Semiconductor Nanocrystals

Zinc Stearate as A Precursor for The Synthesis of Zinc Selenide Semiconductor Nanocrystals Banski, Mateusz, et al. Chemistry of Materials, 2015, 27(11), 3797-3800.

A simple synthetic method can be used to synthesize luminescent zinc selenide (ZnSe) nanocrystals (NCs). This reaction enables the robust synthesis of luminescent ZnSe NCs by heating zinc stearate (ZnSt2), 1-octadecene (ODE), and selenium (Se) in a single flask. During the synthesis process, the role of ZnSt2 is to provide zinc ions and a limited number of surface passivating ligands to the NC surface.
Synthesis of ZnSe NCs from zinc stearate
· ZnSt2 (0.4 mmol), Se (0.4 mmol) and 26 ml of ODE were loaded in a 100 mL three-necked flask and degassed at room temperature.
· The temperature of solution was raised to 295 °C under N2. After 1 hr, the reaction was rapidly cooled down by blowing air onto the flask and an excess of acetone was added to precipitate the NCs.
· For purification, the NCs were dispersed in toluene and centrifuged to remove any insoluble residue. To clean the surface of NCs, the residue was washed three times with methanol and redispersed in toluene for further characterization.
