Synthesis of Vanillin Butyl Ether Substituted Polystyrene Films

Synthesis of Vanillin Butyl Ether Substituted Polystyrene Films Ju, Changha, et al. RSC advances 9.25 (2019): 14188-14193.

To study the orientation behavior of liquid crystal (LC) molecules, we synthesized a series of vanillin derivative-substituted polystyrene films (PVAN#, where # = 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100). Here, the # represents the substitution rate (%) of vanillin butyl ether (VAN), which is a bio-renewable vanillin derivative.
Synthesis of PVAN# Films
PVAN# samples were synthesized by the following method, where # indicates the substitution rate (%) of VAN, one of the vanillin derivatives. The synthesis of PVAN100 is detailed as follows. Poly(vinyl benzyl chloride) (PVBC; 1 g, 6.56 mmol) was dissolved in 30 mL of DMAc. VAN (2.07 g, 9.83 mmol, 150 mol% relative to PVBC) and potassium carbonate (1.631 g, 11.81 mmol, 180 mol% relative to PVBC) were dissolved in 30 mL of DMAc. The PVBC solution was carefully poured into the other solution, and the mixture was magnetically stirred under a nitrogen atmosphere at 75 °C for 24 hours. The synthesized mixture was precipitated into a large amount of methanol to obtain a white precipitate. This precipitate was re-dissolved in DMAc and re-precipitated into methanol several times to purify it, then washed with warm methanol to remove potassium carbonate and any remaining salts. The product, PVAN100, was vacuum dried overnight.
Within the experimental error, the substitution degree of the chloromethyl group by VAN was approximately 100%, and the yield of the product was about 80%.
