Polyglyceryl stearate (PGS), a biocompatible and amphiphilic surfactant, has been effectively utilized in the fabrication of multifunctional hydrogels for advanced wound care. In this study, PGS was incorporated into a gelatin matrix to develop a physically cross-linked gelatin/polyglyceryl stearate/graphene oxide (GPGO) hydrogel system aimed at treating burn wounds.
The GPGO hydrogels were prepared using a self-assembly method. PGS (5-25 mg) was initially dissolved in deionized water at 70-80 °C with continuous stirring to achieve complete solubilization. Subsequently, gelatin (10-40 mg) was added and the solution was stirred until homogenized. The system was allowed to self-assemble at ambient temperature to form hydrogels, with gelation confirmed via the vial inversion method. The optimized formulation was further reinforced with graphene oxide (GO) nanoparticles at varying concentrations (0.1-0.3% w/v), yielding GPGO-1, GPGO-2, and GPGO-3 hydrogels.
Polyglyceryl stearate played a crucial role in stabilizing the hydrogel structure through non-covalent interactions and enhancing dispersion of hydrophobic components. The resulting hydrogels exhibited excellent physical stability, biocompatibility, and desirable mechanical properties. With GO incorporation, the hydrogels demonstrated improved antibacterial and antioxidant performance, making them suitable candidates for the management of infected burn wounds. This study highlights the versatility of polyglyceryl stearate in biomedical hydrogel design.
