N-Oleoylethanolamine for Functionalizing MoS₂/Ag Nanocomposites in Lubricant Applications

N-Oleoylethanolamine for Functionalizing MoS₂/Ag Nanocomposites in Lubricant Applications Xing, Yaping, et al. Lubricants 12.9 (2024): 319.

N-Oleoylethanolamine (NOE) has been successfully utilized to functionalize MoS₂/Ag (MoAg) nanocomposites, enhancing their dispersion in base oils for lubrication applications. The functionalization process involved vigorous stirring of NOE with MoAg in absolute ethanol at 60°C for 1 hour, followed by reduced pressure distillation to obtain functionalized MoAg (Fc-MoAg).
The Fc-MoAg nanocomposites exhibited stable dispersion in base oil (BO) at varying concentrations (0.5-2.0 wt.%), maintaining particle sizes of 500-750 nm without precipitation for at least 15 days. The tribological performance of Fc-MoAg as a lubricant additive was evaluated using steel ball wear tests under standardized (GB/T 3142-82) and non-standard conditions. The four-ball wear test, conducted under a 392 N load at 1450 rpm for 30 minutes, demonstrated significant friction reduction and anti-wear properties compared to base oil alone.
Additional wear tests on steel/steel, steel/zirconia, and zirconia/zirconia pairs confirmed the superior lubricating performance of Fc-MoAg. The coefficients of friction and wear scar diameters were measured using a 3D surface profiler, with three repeated measurements ensuring data accuracy. These findings highlight NOE's role in improving the stability and performance of MoAg-based lubricant additives, making it a promising candidate for advanced lubrication systems.
