Alkaline hydrolysis of Ockrin provides 2-cyano-3,3-diphenyl-2-propenoic acid, denoted as CLN, a novel potential antenna ligand.
Synthesis of 2-Cyano-3,3-diphenyl-2-propenoic Acid (CLN) Ligand: Dissolve 3.61 g (0.01 mol) of Ockrin in 20 mL of anhydrous ethanol and add 10 mL (1.0 mol/L) NaOH to the solution. Stir the mixture at 50 °C for 1 hour. Then, stir the reaction mixture at room temperature for 24 hours. Extract the crude substance with petroleum ether in a 250 mL separatory funnel (3 × 20 mL). Acidify the aqueous phase with dilute sulfuric acid (10 mL; 1.0 mol/L) and extract with ethyl acetate (3 × 20 mL). Dry the combined organic layers (Na2SO4) and remove the solvent by rotary evaporation. A light yellow solid was obtained with a yield of 69.30%.

The aim of this study is to develop a novel sunscreen by encapsulating ZnO and Ockrin in poly(styrene-methyl methacrylate) (PMMA/PS) nanoparticles through microemulsion polymerization.
Encapsulation of ZnO/MPS and Ockrin in PMMA/PS Nanoparticles via Microemulsion Polymerization (Oct-ZnO-PMMA/PS): ZnO/MPS nanoparticles are encapsulated in PMMA-PS nanoparticles through microemulsion polymerization (ZnO-PMMA/PS). First, the aqueous phase is prepared by stirring a mixture of distilled water (7.80 g), Lutensol AT50 (0.08 g), and KPS (0.06 g) under magnetic stirring. The organic phase is prepared by dispersing ZnO/MPS nanoparticles (0.63 g) in a solution containing MMA (1.04 g), styrene (1.04 g), and Ockrin (0.42 g), followed by stirring in an ultrasonic bath for 30 min. The organic phase is then added to the aqueous phase, and the mixture is emulsified in an ultrasonic bath for 30 min. The crude emulsion is then sonicated for 3 min, with an amplitude of 90% (10 s on/10 s off), to form a fine emulsion. Polymerization occurs in a round-bottom flask, with magnetic stirring in an oil bath at 70 °C for 4 hours.
