Synthesis of Partially Bio-based and Biodegradable Poly(ethylene brassylate-co-ε-caprolactone) Copolyesters

Synthesis of Partially Bio-based and Biodegradable Poly(ethylene brassylate-co-ε-caprolactone) Copolyesters Wei, Zhiyong, et al. Journal of the Mechanical Behavior of Biomedical Materials 91 (2019): 255-265.

Random poly(ethylene brassylate-co-ε-caprolactone) (P(EB-co-CL)) copolyesters are an ideal model system for the detailed study of the composition dependence of structural and mechanical properties, which is of great importance for the regulation of the tunable physical properties of random copolymers.
Copolymer Synthesis
As shown in the scheme, a series of copolymers composed of varying EB and CL contents were synthesized in bulk via ring-opening polymerization (ROP). Benzyl alcohol (BnOH) was added as an initiator, so that BnOH, by providing ROH, activates the catalyst (Ph3Bi), with an initiator to catalyst ratio of 100:1.
Monomer mixtures with different EB/CL/BnOH ratios of 100/0 (14 g, 51.85 mmol/0/21.6 mg, 0.2 mmol), 75/25 (12.28 g, 45.48 mmol/1.72 g, 15.09 mmol/21.6 mg, 0.2 mmol), 50/50 (9.85 g, 36.45 mmol/4.15 g, 36.45 mmol/21.6 mg, 0.2 mmol), 30/70 (7.05 g, 26.11 mmol/6.95 g, 60.95 mmol/21.6 mg, 0.2 mmol), 25/75 (6.18 g, 22.89 mmol/7.82 g, 68.63 mmol/21.6 mg, 0.2 mmol), 20/80 (5.21 g, 19.30 mmol/8.79 g, 77.13 mmol/21.6 mg, 0.2 mmol), 15/85 (4.95 g, 18.33 mmol/9.05 g, 79.41 mmol/21.6 mg, 0.2 mmol), 10/90 (2.92 g, 10.81 mmol/11.08 g, 97.22 mmol/21.6 mg, 0.2 mmol), 5/95 (1.55 g, 5.74 mmol/12.45 g, 109.20 mmol/21.6 mg, 0.2 mmol), and 0/100 (0/14 g, 122.81 mmol/21.6 mg, 0.2 mmol) were respectively added with (0.25 g, 0.92 mmol/0.105 g, 0.92 mmol) and (0.124 g, 0.46 mmol/0.157 g, 1.38 mmol). The reaction products were dissolved in chloroform and reacted in a round-bottom flask immersed in a 150 °C oil bath for 36 hours. The samples were then precipitated in excess methanol to remove catalyst impurities and unreacted monomers. Finally, the polymers were vacuum-dried at 25 °C for 24 hours.
