The route for dehydration of 1,3-butanediol (1,3-BDO) to produce 1,3-butadiene (BD) is shown in the figure. 1,3-BDO is dehydrated to unsaturated alcohol (UOL), which is then further dehydrated to BD. 1,3-BDO produces three types of UOL, namely 3-buten-2-ol (3B2OL), 2B1OL and 3B1OL. In the selective production of UOL from 1,3-BDO, rare earth oxides were found to be excellent catalysts. Stabilized zirconia and rare earth zirconates have recently been found to be excellent catalysts for the formation of UOL from 1,3-BDO. Gas phase dehydration of 1,3-BDO at 325 °C using yttrium zirconate Y2Zr2O7 has high conversion and high UOL selectivity. In addition, Yb2Zr2O7 prepared by hydrothermal method has higher crystallinity and improved catalytic performance.
