Mineralization of Acid Black 1 in Water by Electro-Fenton Method

Mineralization of Acid Black 1 in Water by Electro-Fenton Method Ayça Atılır Özcan, et al. Chemosphere, 2018, 202, 618-625.

Acid Black 1, also known as Naphthol Blue Black (NBB), is a synthetic dye that belongs to the azo dye class. Treating azo dye waste before it enters environmental aquatic systems is a very important task. Research shows that the electro-Fenton method is a suitable and effective method for removing NBB and its intermediates from water.
Degradation behavior of NBB in Electro-Fenton experiment
· The formation of aniline and 4-nitroaniline and also the high formation rate of ammonium indicate that the mineralization starts by the cleavage of azo bonds (-N=N-). The aniline undergoes further reaction and leads to the formation of phenol and p-hydroquinone which is subsequently oxidized to p-benzoquinone.
· The reaction of phenol with hydroxyl radicals may produce p-hydroquinone, catechol and resorcinol. Catechol and resorcinol may be converted to pyrogallol and 1,2,4-benzentriol. The 4-nitroaniline is converted to both 4-nitrophenol and 2- hydroxy-4-nitroaniline. The remaining part of NBB after release of aniline and 4- nitroaniline is a multi-substituted naphthalene ring.
· The oxidative ring opening reactions of the aromatic oxidation intermediates lead to the formation of maleic acid, butanedioic acid, butenedioic acid, glycolic acid, malic acid, glyceric acid and 3-hydroxypropanoic acid. The final products are oxalic and oxamic acids which are subsequently converted to carbon dioxide, water and inorganic species (ammonium, nitrate and sulfate) to complete the mineralization of NBB.
