Application of Isopropyl Stearate (IPS) in the Preparation of Phase Change Material Composites

Application of Isopropyl Stearate (IPS) in the Preparation of Phase Change Material Composites Dixit, Prakhar, et al. Journal of Molecular Liquids, 2022, 363, 119829.

Phase change materials (PCM) can store large amounts of thermal energy through phase change and are well-known latent heat storage materials. Using isopropyl stearate (IPS) as PCM and expanded graphite (EG) as the supporting matrix, IPS/EG-based phase change material composites were successfully prepared. These IPS/EG-based phase change material composites were prepared with IPS:EG ratios of 10:1, 10:1.25, 10:1.5, 10:1,75, and 10:2 respectively.
Properties and applications of IPS/EG composite materials
· In the composite material, PCM is evenly distributed in the porous network structure of EG. Their melting points are between 8.5 °C and 9.5 °C.
· The optimal ratio of IPS-EG composite is 10:1.25, which has a phase change enthalpy of 172.25 ± 2.05 J g -1. IPS/EG (10:1.25) has stable performance over 250 thermal cycles.
· The PCM composite material was packed into a vaccine carrier box and refrigerated and exposed to 30~50°C to verify its thermal buffering properties. The results indicate that the composite material can be used in temperature control systems for products stored and transported below 15°C.

Safety Assessment of Isopropyl Stearate in Cosmetics

Safety Assessment of Isopropyl Stearate in Cosmetics Fiume, Monice M., et al. International journal of toxicology, 2015, 34(2), 5S-69S.

The Cosmetic Ingredients Review Expert Panel evaluated the safety of 237 alkyl esters for use in cosmetics, including isopropyl stearate. Isopropyl stearate is an ester produced by the reaction of isopropyl alcohol and 12-hydroxystearic acid. Isopropyl stearate is a commonly used skin conditioning agent that is safe under current usage practices and concentrations.
Final report on the safety assessment of isopropyl stearate
· An amount of up to 25% was the highest concentration used in a leave-on formulation
· Rats had an acute oral LD50 greater than 8 mL/kg
· Undiluted test material caused moderate irritation to rabbit skin in 2 studies with PIIs of 2.35
· Human testing showed that a 1.0% concentration in a formulation was non-irritating to most subjects (105), while slightly irritating to a few (12), and during a 4-week use test with 40 subjects, no adverse reactions were reported
· Undiluted test material did not cause irritation to rabbit eyes
· Frequency of use and concentration data for isopropyl stearate are shown in the figure along with a summary of historical data for previously reviewed ingredients.
