Diazolidinyl Urea Used for the Synthesis of Self-Healing and Recyclable Polyurethane Elastomers

Diazolidinyl Urea Used for the Synthesis of Self-Healing and Recyclable Polyurethane Elastomers Xu, Yawen, et al. Chemical Engineering Journal 466 (2023): 143179.

Diazolidinyl urea (DU), a multifunctional crosslinking agent known for its strong hydrogen-bonding capabilities, has been employed in the synthesis of high-performance, room-temperature self-healing polyurethane (PU) elastomers. In this study, DU was strategically integrated into the PU network alongside dynamic aromatic disulfide bonds to address the long-standing trade-off between mechanical robustness and dynamic adaptability in elastomeric materials.
The synthesis began with moisture-free PTMG reacted with isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) in the presence of a DBTDL catalyst under an inert atmosphere, followed by the addition of 4-aminophenyl disulfide (APDS) to introduce dynamic disulfide crosslinks. DU, dissolved in DMF, was subsequently added as a chain extender and multifunctional hydrogen-bonding motif. Its incorporation provided both strong H-bonds and additional crosslinking points, enhancing the structural integrity of the resulting polymer.
The final polyurethane elastomer (PU-SS-DU) demonstrated excellent mechanical performance, with a tensile strength of 14.08 MPa and toughness of 64.6 MJ m⁻³. It also exhibited outstanding room-temperature self-healing efficiency (\~81%), multiple recyclability, and superior elastic recovery. Notably, this material was successfully applied in the fabrication of wearable strain sensors for motion detection, underscoring DU's critical role in the design of next-generation flexible electronics.
This case exemplifies the utility of diazolidinyl urea in constructing multifunctional polymer networks with advanced mechanical and dynamic properties.
