Bromophenol Blue (BPB) Used for Dyeing Cotton Fabrics Coated with Cationic Finishing Agents

Bromophenol Blue (BPB) Used for Dyeing Cotton Fabrics Coated with Cationic Finishing Agents Wang, Wen-Yi, and Chi-Wai Kan. Cellulose 27 (2020): 9045-9059.

Polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMB) is a commercially available cationic antimicrobial agent that can form a stable and water-insoluble blue complex salt with bromophenol blue (BPB) at room temperature. Here, the feasibility and applicability of using BPB for dyeing PHMB-coated fabrics are reported.
Dyeing Procedure
First, sodium BPB solutions of different concentrations (200, 250, and 300 mg/L) were prepared and stored in amber laboratory bottles before dyeing. The specific dyeing process is as follows: the fabric samples coated with PHMB were directly immersed in the BPB solution with a bath ratio of 20:1, taken out after 20 minutes, and rinsed with tap water to remove excess dye. Subsequently, the dyed samples were air-dried at room temperature. The samples were named with suffixes indicating the concentration of each BPB solution used in dyeing. For example, the P1 sample dyed with each BPB solution was named P1-200, P1-250, and P1-300, respectively.
Continuous Dyeing Using Bromophenol Blue
The P4 fabric samples were prepared by coating with 0.05% PHMB and 0.04% binder. This sample was also cured using a dry-roll curing method. The moisture absorption rate was 80%, and the drying and curing temperatures were maintained at 90 °C for 2 minutes and 130 °C for 45 seconds, respectively. Subsequently, the P4 samples were dyed with BPB solutions of different concentrations (200, 250, and 300 mg/L) to study continuous dyeing. The dyeing time was 20 minutes, with a bath ratio of 20:1.
